What is 24-hour care at home?
Some people need around-the-clock care, whether that’s to manage a medical condition or for extra support with day-to-day life. That’s where 24-hour care at home can help. A trained carer will come to live with you at home, so you’ll always have the right support at hand when you need it.
At Novus Care, we believe that home is the best place to receive care. For many, our care can be the difference between moving into residential care (a care home) or staying in the home they love. It means enjoying familiar surroundings, familiar routines and the love and support of their family. 24-hour home care is sometimes known as ‘24-hour live-in care’.
Your 24-hour live-in care plan
No two people are the same. We all have different needs, preferences, hobbies and interests.
That’s why all our care is tailored to you. When you choose Novus Care, we work with you to draw up a bespoke care plan. Then we match you with a trained carer who shares your interests and outlook on life. They can support you with all kinds of day-to-day tasks, including:
• Housekeeping: vacuuming, mopping, laundry, etc.
• Cooking: preparing your favourite healthy meals
• Companionship: keeping you company and having a natter
• Errands: picking up groceries, prescriptions, etc.
• Personal care: washing, dressing and toileting, etc.
• Administering medication: making sure you take the right dose at the right time
• Support for appointments: helping you get to appointments on time (including driving you there)

When you choose care at home, you get:
| Independence | Familiarity | Close family ties |
| Your carer is there to support your lifestyle and independence, and will only step in where needed. | With home care, you can follow familiar routines and stay in the surroundings you know and love. | Couples can stay together – and receive tailored care together if needed. Family and friends can visit whenever they choose. |
| Care options | Companionship | Infection control |
| Home care is a flexible option that adapts to your requirements, whether you need complex care or just a bit of help at home. | 24-hour home care caters to emotional needs, as well as physical needs. Our carers make great companions who are always happy to lend an ear. | Home care often offers better protection from infections than hospitals or residential care. Our carers follow strict hygiene standards to keep you safe. |
24-hour live-in care vs residential care
If you need around-the-clock care, you and your family might need to decide between 24-hour live-in care and residential care (moving into a care home).
What you choose will depend on your unique needs and circumstances. Here’s a quick comparison to help you decide.
| 24-hour live-in care | Residential care |
|---|---|
| 24-hour care at home from a dedicated carer | 24-hour care from a shared care team |
| Couples can stay together in the home they love | Most care homes don’t offer care accommodation for married couples |
| You choose your lifestyle and routine | Communal areas, activities and rules |
| Familiar surroundings – can be beneficial for those living with dementia | Unfamiliar surroundings can feel isolating and disruptive |
| Still means maintaining your own home (your carer can help with chores and running errands) | No need to look after your home, which can mean fewer burdens and bills to pay |
| You choose meal times and what to eat | Menus and meal times are fixed |
| Loved ones can visit whenever you want | Visiting hours are often strict |
| You can keep beloved pets | Pets aren’t allowed |
How do 24-hour care at home costs compare to residential care?
Live-in care is often more cost-effective than residential care. This is especially true for couples who both need 24-hour care. In a care home, you’d have to pay for two beds. But with live-in care, you only pay for one carer.

Your 24-hour home care questions answered
How does 24-hour care work?
When you choose 24-hour home care, we match you with a trained carer who comes to live with you at home. They’ll be there around the clock to help with housekeeping, medication, personal care and other tasks to support your independence.
You’ll need to have a spare room that your carer can use as a bedroom. This must have, at minimum, a single bed and a chest of drawers or a wardrobe. Other facilities can be shared.
Are there restrictions on what my carer can do?
Yes. Your carer is not allowed to carry out certain health care tasks, such as giving injections and changing dressings on open wounds. These tasks must be carried out by the district nurse. They’re also not allowed to do DIY or home improvements.
When will my carer take a break?
Your carer must take 14 hours of breaks per week by law. They might take these as a two-hour daily break or take a few afternoons off each week.
They will also take longer breaks every three to six weeks. These breaks last for one or two weeks and will be covered by a replacement carer.
Will my carer be able to drive?
We employ wonderful carers from all walks of life, some of whom are drivers. If you want your carer to use your car, you’ll need to arrange insurance cover under your own policy and at your own cost.
Are carers DBS-checked?
Yes. All carers undergo rigorous background checks before they’re allowed to enter clients’ homes. That includes checks with the police and safeguarding authorities.
Can you support my health condition?
We know that those living with a medical condition often need a different kind of care. That’s why we train our 24-hour carers to support people with a broad range of conditions. Whether you need 24-hour dementia care at home or short-term support after being discharged from hospital, we can help.
