Knee and hip replacement care
While knee and hip replacements are fairly common and a relatively short surgery, it can take many weeks to recover fully and requires care and rehabilitation to strengthen muscles and regain and improve the use of the joints.
Hospital stays are usually around three to five days, but this will depend on the individual and their confidence that you have someone to help care for you at home and that you can look after your hip or knee safely. An occupational therapist will look into if you might need any additional equipment to help at home.
The hospital will provide advice about looking after your knee or hip at home and you’ll need to use a frame or crutches to get around as well as practise exercises from a physiotherapist.
Home care for knee and hip replacement
Having knee and hip replacement care at home can be beneficial for your recovery and ensure you can make a smooth recovery and are supported with the more challenging tasks.
A carer can help and assist with your physiotherapy exercises to help strengthen your muscles and joints to aid your recovery and get you mobile again.
Whilst mobility is more challenging in the days after the surgery, a carer can support you with moving around your home, standing and sitting and getting up the stairs if necessary. As well as this, they can help you take it easy by helping with household chores such as cleaning, laundry and cooking or doing food shopping and picking up prescriptions.
They’ll also be able to assist with personal care such as help getting dressed and undressed, washing and going to the toilet or getting to the bathroom.
There are a range of care options you could opt for depending on your needs and support circle. You could opt for a carer to visit a few hours a day, during the day while family or friends are at work or on a live-in basis – moving into your home to provide round the clock care and support.
