What is arthritis home care?
Arthritis home care is a type of one-to-one care provided in your own home. It’s a condition-led care service, meaning it’s specifically designed to help manage arthritis symptoms and provide tailored support for people living with the condition.
Day-to-day support varies depending on the type of arthritis and how much it affects your life. It can include home help, medication support, mobility assistance and more.
At Novus Care, we focus on providing at-home arthritis care that empowers you to stay independent and do more of the things you love.

Live-in arthritis care at home
With live-in arthritis care at home, a highly trained carer comes to live with you around the clock. They’ll always be close by and ready to help when you need a bit of extra support. It’s a great option if your arthritis makes day-to-day living more difficult than it used to be. They’ll only step in where needed, so you stay in control of your own routine, hobbies and preferences.
Visiting arthritis home care
Visiting arthritis home care is very flexible. You choose when your carer visits and how often – as little as 30 minutes each week, or as much as several visits each day. It might suit you if you’re independent but need occasional support to manage symptoms and keep on top of things at home. For example, your carer can visit in the morning to help you get ready. Or they can pop by in the evening to lend a hand in the kitchen.
Respite care for arthritis
Respite care is a temporary option. It’s designed for when family carers need to take a break – when they go on holiday, for instance, or they fall ill. However, it’s useful in other circumstances, too, such as when you need temporary care after hospital treatment or want to trial live-in care. As with all our care services, you’ll get a tailored care plan to make sure all your care needs are met, every single day.
Overnight arthritis care
We know that arthritis symptoms often get worse in the evening. If you’re OK during the day but experience more pain or disrupted sleep at night, our overnight care service can help. With this option, a carer will stay with you from evening until morning, ready to step in and help if you need it. And even if you don’t need help, it can be very reassuring to know that someone’s nearby.
Companionship care
It’s an unfortunate fact that many people living with arthritis experience loneliness – often because pain, tiredness and mobility problems make it harder to socialise. That’s where companionship care can help. Our carers make great companions – friendly, compassionate and always ready to lend a listening ear. Whether you need an extra boost of confidence or just an occasional cuppa and a chat, they’re the perfect people to have around.
If you’re not sure which type of care suits you best, don’t worry. Contact our team today and we’ll have a friendly, no-obligation chat about your options.
Your arthritis care plan
With Novus Care, all the support you receive is tailored to you. We’ll work with you and your loved ones to draw up a bespoke arthritis care plan that covers all your day-to-day needs and preferences. It’s all about making sure you have the tools and support to live well with arthritis at home.
That means our support looks different for everyone. However, it can include:
• Household upkeep: is arthritis making it harder for you to keep on top of chores? Your carer can do housework to help maintain a happy home.
• Daily errands: your carer can run errands, such as shopping trips and picking up prescriptions. That means more time to do the things you love.
• Help with medication: we can support you with arthritis and pain medication, making sure you take the right dose, right on schedule.
• Meal preparation: if needed, your carer can prepare healthy, nutritious meals for you – or help out in the kitchen as you cook.
• Exercise: gentle exercise can often help relieve pain and improve mobility. We can support and encourage you to exercise in line with your doctor’s recommendations.
Personal care: arthritis can sometimes make washing, dressing and toileting difficult. We can provide as much or as little support as you need, while always respecting your dignity.

Your arthritis home care questions answered
What are the most common types of arthritis?
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. Two of the most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type, affecting more than nine million people in the UK. Rheumatoid arthritis is less common, but still affects around one percent of the UK population (about 500,000 people).
What are the causes and symptoms of arthritis?
The causes and symptoms of arthritis can vary widely depending on the type. What they all have in common is that they cause joint pain and stiffness and can limit mobility.
Osteoarthritis is caused by the physical wear and tear of joints, and most often affects the knees, hips and hands. It’s characterised by sharp joint pain and a grinding or clicking sound when the joint moves. Symptoms often get worse as the day goes on.
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused when the immune system mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints. Often, it starts with smaller joints like fingers and wrists before spreading to larger joints, such as the knees and elbows. Symptoms include joint swelling (on both sides of the body) and severe stiffness. It can also cause fatigue and fever.
Can arthritis come on suddenly?
Yes. While arthritis typically develops over months or years, certain types can appear very quickly. That includes gout – a sudden buildup of acid in the joints – and septic arthritis, which is a very serious condition typically caused by an infection.
Many people with rheumatoid arthritis also experience flare-ups, where the pain and symptoms suddenly get worse and stay that way for a time.
How can I help when caring for someone with arthritis?
Whether you’re caring for someone with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or another form of the condition, there’s a lot you can do to help. You can:
• Help track symptoms: keep an eye out for the times of day when pain or stiffness is at its worst. This can help you structure support and pain relief.
• Make adjustments at home: consider tools and home adaptations that can make day-to-day living easier.
• Encourage safe exercise: if their doctor recommends it, you can support them by going on gentle walks together or joining a low-impact exercise class.
• Offer emotional support: managing an invisible condition like arthritis can be draining. A listening ear goes a long way.
Most importantly, take care to respect their independence. Be ready to help, but only step in when it’s needed.
What is arthritis nursing care?
Arthritis nursing care involves day-to-day medical care to relieve symptoms and make daily tasks more manageable. That can include pain management, anti-inflammatory medication and advice on self-care.
Does the government fund arthritis care services?
The government does not directly fund private arthritis home care agencies. However, depending on your individual circumstances, you may qualify for financial support to help fund your care.
