Muscular Dystrophy care
Coming to terms with a diagnosis of muscular dystrophy is difficult. As well as facing an increasing level of disability over time, muscular dystrophy care can support you through this – providing help where you need it the most.
Muscular dystrophy is a progressive inherited genetic condition that causes the muscles to weaken over time. It usually starts in a group of muscles before spreading more widely. There are many different types of muscular dystrophy with different symptoms – not all of them will cause severe disability or affect life expectancy.
Depending on the type of muscular dystrophy, it may be diagnosed in childhood, adulthood or later in life. Symptoms may include finding it difficult to climb the stairs, lift objects or play sports you used to.
Caring for someone with Muscular Dystrophy
While there is no cure for muscular dystrophy, there are treatments to manage it, and these will be recommended to you based on your needs and symptoms.
As the condition progresses, mobility and strength will be gradually lost – things such as low-impact exercise and physiotherapy can help maintain muscle strength and flexibility. Occupational therapy can help you around your home and help with independence by using techniques that work for you. You may also opt for physical aids such as a wheelchair, leg braces or crutches to help you get about.
If the muscles in your chest become too weak to breathe properly, you may need machines and medical care to manage this.
Our carers can provide a range of care to help someone living with muscular dystrophy to live a fulfilling life. From additional help with housework such as cleaning and cooking to personal care such as washing, getting dressed and going to the toilet – our carers can provide their services on a daily, weekly or live in basis to meet your needs.
They can also help with medical care, such as reminding you to take medication or help administering it, transport to appointments and help practising physiotherapy exercises at home.
