Post-stroke care at home, tailored to you and your family
At Novus Care, we firmly believe that adapting to the after-effects of a stroke is easier at home. But we also recognise that each recovery journey is unique – and what works for one family may not work for everyone.
That’s why our stroke home care is completely flexible and 100% tailored to you. It means getting the right care to cope with changing health needs, feel supported in your recovery and make the most of life at home.
With us, you can expect one-to-one support from dedicated carers specially trained in after-stroke care. Our care services range from domiciliary home care visits to 24-hour, after-stroke live-in care, so you can choose the type of support that’s best for you.
We’re here for families, too. Our team supports family carers through respite care breaks, so they can enjoy some well-deserved time away.
What is after-stroke care?
After-stroke care is specialist care to help a person adapt to the after-effects of a stroke. It can involve a wide range of support, including speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counselling. Many stroke patients also have home carers to help with health, emotional and practical needs.
No two stroke recovery journeys are the same. Transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs, or mini-strokes) often result in minimal side effects. But severe strokes can cause paralysis, mobility issues, speech difficulties and more. That’s why it’s really important to provide a joined-up programme of care tailored to each stroke survivor.
After-stroke care is also known as ‘post-stroke care’ and ‘stroke aftercare’. At Novus Care, we specialise in one-to-one post-stroke care at home.

After-stroke live-in care
People impacted by severe strokes often need around-the-clock support to make the most of daily life. If a family carer can’t be there 24/7, our after-stroke live-in care service can help. A dedicated carer will move in with you or your loved one, providing expert, one-to-one support whenever you need it.
Visiting stroke home care
Are you on the road to recovery but still need support from time to time? Visiting stroke home care might be the best choice for you. Sometimes called ‘domiciliary care’, this type of care sees a trained carer visit you to provide support as often as needed. That could be every day or as little as half an hour each week.
Respite care for stroke patients
We understand how challenging it can be to adjust after a loved one has had a stroke. With our temporary respite care for stroke patients, family carers can take a well-deserved break while we provide a consistent level of high-quality support. This option might also suit you if your carer falls ill or if you’re still deciding how to move forward with home care.
Overnight care
Overnight stroke care at home is just what it sounds like. A specialist carer will stay overnight from around 10pm to 7am, so you and your family can rest easy knowing you have help at hand. You might want to consider this option if you have a family carer during the day but don’t have help at night.
Companionship
Companionship care focuses on your emotional needs. It’s all about having a friendly face and a safe pair of hands. Your companion carer can encourage you in your recovery, help you get out and about, or simply stop by now and then for a chat. They can help with health care and offer practical support, too.

How our person-centric care can help with the after-effects of a stroke
Across all our home care services, we take a person-centric approach. That means delivering after-stroke care at home tailored to your needs – and making sure the day-to-day care we provide fits your wider recovery journey.
We work closely with individuals, families, district nurses, hospitals, local GPs and healthcare organisations. Together, we create a flexible aftercare plan that considers emotional needs, as well as medical and practical needs.
With our person-centric, joined-up care approach, you can expect:
• Help with recovery: our carers can help you work through the after-effects of a stroke. We create a bespoke care plan to support your physical and emotional recovery.
• Familiar surroundings: every stroke is different, but most people would agree that recovering at home is best. We make sure you can continue with aspects of hospital care in the comfort of your own home.
• Back-to-work support: we understand how important it is for some people to return to work. Our carers can help maintain your everyday work routine while taking care of medical needs.
• Mobility support: with tailored after-stroke care at home, you can work on rehabilitation at a time that works for you. Our carers can support you in rehab sessions, too – even outside of hospital.
• Appointment support: we can accompany you to appointments with specialists, such as speech and language therapists and physiotherapists. We can also help you get to appointments by car or public transport.
• Communication support: we understand that many people find communication challenging after a stroke. We can use a variety of communication techniques so you can have a say in your care and your day-to-day life.
• Personal care: following a stroke, many find washing and dressing more difficult. Home carers can help you look and feel your best, as well as assist with toileting.
• Help around the house: we can help with household tasks, including light cleaning and looking after pets. Our carers can pop to the shops and prepare meals, too.
Dedicated carers, trained in after-stroke care
At Novus Care, we’ve provided expert stroke care at home for more than 10 years. Our whole team is here to support you, but it’s our carers who make the biggest difference.
That’s because we employ carers who truly care. They’re dedicated to their role and passionate about helping clients like you. And with high-quality training and regular refresher courses, we make sure they have the skills needed to provide specialist after-stroke care.
For you, that means:
• The right support, on your terms: our carers understand your needs and are trained to support you. But they value your independence and will only step in where needed.
• Expert care from like-minded carers: we carefully match you with a carer who has the right skills to support you and who shares your outlook on life.
• CQC-regulated care: our home care is fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission. We’re regularly assessed to make sure we meet and exceed high care quality standards.
Stroke home care FAQs
What care is needed after a stroke?
Stroke survivors all have different needs and face different challenges. That means the kind of support they require varies, too. The support available ranges from in-hospital care to residential care to nursing care for stroke patients at home. Many stroke survivors also need speech and language therapy, physiotherapy or specialist medical care on their journey to recovery.
Do I need to keep specialist equipment for stroke patients at home?
Stroke can – but doesn’t always – lead to mobility challenges. If you or your loved one needs help getting around at home, specialist equipment can make things easier. Common equipment includes walkers and wheelchairs (for general mobility), bathroom safety tools (like grab bars and shower chairs) and physiotherapy devices. At Novus Care, we train our carers in the use of mobility equipment to help keep you safe and mobile at home.
What is the cost of in-home care for stroke patients?
Our care is highly flexible and is tailored to you. So, prices can vary depending on the type of stroke home care and the level of support you need. Why not contact our team to chat about your care needs and request a tailored quote?
Who pays for care after a stroke?
There are several ways to pay for after-stroke care. If you have long-term, complex needs, you might be able to access NHS funding to pay for home care or a residential care home. Some people may qualify for means-tested care funding from their local council. Others fund care using their own savings or family contributions.
