Motor Neurone disease care
Motor neurone disease is a progressive condition that affects the brain and nerves when motor neurone cells gradually stop working over a period of time.
Treatment can help reduce the impact on daily life and many people live with the condition for many years. Highly specialised clinics and occupational therapy can make daily tasks easier; physiotherapy can help maintain strength, speech and language therapy can help with communication, a dietitian can advise on diet and eating and there are some medicines to help slow the progress and relieve symptoms.
Symptoms can start with weakness and clumsiness, slurred speech, poor grip, muscle cramp and twitches, weight loss and difficulty stopping yourself crying or laughing in inappropriate situations.
As the disease progresses, it can become increasingly difficult to move around, swallow, talk and breathe meaning more medical care is needed such as a feeding tube or oxygen mask.
Care for people with Motor Neurone disease
The level of care needed for someone with motor neurone disease will vary as the disease progresses and we can provide care throughout this journey with you. We understand this can be a difficult and frustrating condition to live with and we are here to provide both physical and emotional support to you and your family throughout.
From taking you to appointments and helping you put your occupational therapy and physiotherapy into action to helping you with mobility, housework and personal care at home – we can provide support that can be adapted as you need it. We’ll aim to help you remain independent for as long as possible, taking our queues from you on the level of help you want or need and stepping in when needed.
As the disease progresses and you begin to require a higher level of care, we can review our care plan with you and provide all the help and support you need to be comfortable and live your life as fully as you can. We can support you around the home, with personal care and assist with medical care and medications.
