Tailored care for couples at home
We know that being separated from your partner might feel unthinkable – especially if you’ve spent many decades living together as a couple. But when illness or mobility gets increasingly challenging, living separately can become a real possibility.
That’s where our couples’ care service can help. Choose Novus Care and we’ll provide tailored, expert support to help you live comfortably together in the home you share. For you, it means more than a helping hand at home. It means not having to give up the life and routine you’ve worked so hard to build together.
Our care services are highly flexible and are built around you. Whether you need short-term care or 24-hour live-in care, we’ll create a tailored care plan based on your unique needs and those of your partner. Plus, you’ll have the support of a highly trained, DBS-checked carer and a professional care management team. It’s all about making sure you have the right kind of care to live the life you want.
What is live-in care for couples?
Live-in care for couples is just what it sounds like – you and your partner get a dedicated carer who lives with you around the clock. This means there’ll always be someone around to make sure you feel safe and looked after.
The type of care we provide is up to you. Perhaps you feel fit and healthy but are struggling to support a partner who needs constant care. We can help look after them and deal with housework so you have more time and energy to do the things you love. Or, if you both need support, we can provide tailored care for each of your unique needs.
Your carer can offer as little or as much support as you require. That might mean helping with light housework, gardening, food shopping and running errands. Or it could involve around-the-clock health care (such as administering medication) and personal care (help with personal grooming and toileting).
The important thing is that you’re in charge of your own care. We step in where needed so you can live independently and comfortably together in your own home.

Live-in care for couples
Live-in care is around-the-clock care. It might suit you if you’re finding it hard to care for your partner on your own – or if you both need constant care. You’ll get a dedicated carer who lives with you and helps out where needed, whether that means assisting with chores or providing 24-hour health care. Most importantly, it means getting the right kind of support to live comfortably together at home.
Visiting care for couples
Are you caring for a partner with a health condition or mobility difficulties? Would a little bit of extra support go a long way? Visiting care might be the right choice for you. With visiting care, a trained carer pops in from time to time to help out at home. They can provide as little or as much support as you need – and we’ll plan their visits to suit your schedule.
Respite care for couples
We know that caring for a partner can be stressful. If you need to take a break, respite care might be a good fit. We’ll send a trained carer to take over so you can recharge your batteries and take some much-needed time for yourself. This might be for a few weeks or even just for a few hours. In any case, you’ll still get a tailored care plan so your partner continues to receive a high standard of care.
Respite care can also be a good option if you’re going into hospital or recovering from an illness. We’ll step in until you feel ready to take over again.
Overnight couples’ care
Overnight care is similar to live-in care. The difference is that your carer doesn’t live with you around the clock. Instead, they stop by in the evening and stay until morning. For you, this means extra peace of mind at a time when we often feel at our most vulnerable. It could suit you if you both need help managing health conditions at night – or if you simply want reassurance that help is at hand.
Companionship care
Loneliness can affect anyone – even couples who live together. That’s where companionship care comes in. It’s all about having a friendly new face around so you’ll always have someone to talk to. Your companion carer can join in with hobbies, help you get out and about or just stop by for a cuppa and a chat. It’s up to you.
Care at home vs care homes for couples
Needing 24-hour care doesn’t have to mean living separate lives. With live-in care or a couples’ care home, you and your partner can get the support you need to live comfortably together.
For elderly couples, live-in care has many benefits. You get around-the-clock care so you can live life to your own schedule and stay in a comfortable, familiar environment. On the other hand, care homes for couples offer 24-hour care in a social setting. However, it can be hard to find a home that offers a truly tailored couples’ care service.
It’s up to you to decide which best suits your needs. Here’s a quick comparison to help you choose.
Live-in care for couples | V | Care homes for couples |
---|---|---|
Personal around-the-clock one- to-one care from a dedicated carer | V | Around-the-clock care from a shared care team |
You get to stay together in the home you love | V | Might mean separating as most homes do not offer residential care for married couples |
Continuity and choice of lfestyle | V | Communal areas and set rules |
Familiar surroundings and routines are beneficial for people living with dementia | V | Can feel isolating and disruptive, especially for people living with dementia |
More affordable than a care home. Couples care starts from £1550 per week | V | Often expensive. Weekly costs can reach £2000 or more |
You still have to maintain your own home, though your carer can help with chores and errands | V | Can mean fewer bills and burdens because you are not looking after your own home |
Choice of menu and meal times | V | Set menus and meal times |
Family and friends can visit | V | Less freedom to live life the way you want. Care homes can have strict visiting hours |
Pets can remain at home | V | Pets aren't allowed to stay in care homes |
Your couples’ care questions answered
What is respite care for couples?
Respite care is a type of short-term care. You might choose respite care if you need a break from caring for your partner or have other commitments that prevent you from looking after them. Our respite care service is very flexible and includes a tailored care plan to make sure your partner receives high-quality, uninterrupted support.
Who arranges care at home for elderly couples?
You can arrange your own care or give permission for a friend or relative to arrange it for you. The important thing is that the decision is up to you. The only exceptions are if someone else has power of attorney to make these decisions or if you lack the mental capacity to manage your own affairs.
How can I organise couple care for my parents?
You can arrange care privately on their behalf if you have their permission. You can only arrange care without permission if you have these rights under power of attorney or if they lack the mental capacity to make the decision.
Is there an age limit to home care for elderly couples?
No. At Novus Care, we provide care for couples of all ages. That includes older couples, as well as younger couples who need extra support to live well at home.
Can couples go into a care home?
Yes. Some care homes offer residential care for married couples and cohabiting partners. Unfortunately, this is still uncommon. Many care homes are not set up to provide tailored couples’ care – especially if each partner has different needs.
Can I get help to pay for couples’ care?
If you’re eligible, your local council may be able to help fund your care. If you and your partner both need care, you’ll need to apply for this funding individually. However, the council may consider your shared assets (money, property and investments) when deciding whether to provide funding. Learn more about how to fund your care.
