Caring for someone with Down’s Syndrome
Down’s syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when someone is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. Someone with Down’s Syndrome will have some type of learning disability but many can go on to live independent lives such as getting a job and moving out of the family home whilst others might need additional care.
People with Down’s syndrome are individual with their own personalities and preferences, so it is important these are appreciated and respected. Down’s Syndrome care can help someone live a more independent life in their own accommodation and be self-sufficient, providing assistance with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, shopping and going to appointments.
A Down’s syndrome carer will often aim to encourage independence and support the individual to complete tasks themselves and step in when necessary.
Down’s Syndrome home care
The level of care needed will depend on the individual and how severe their leaning disability is as well as any Down’s syndrome health complications such heart problems, gastrointestinal issues, immune disorders, spinal problems and dementia.
Down’s syndrome home care can be tailored based on these needs and care can be given accordingly such as any medical appointments or medication to manage related health problems or support with tasks around the home.
Care can be anything from a few hours a day to help with housework and personal care to a live in carer who can live at the property with the person they care for to provide round the clock support and care.
Whether someone with Down’s syndrome is living in the family home, moving into their own independent accommodation or is getting older and needs additional support and management of health issues – we can tailor an individual care plan to tailor specifically to their needs.
