Epilepsy home care

Get the peace of mind you need to live life to the fullest. Our epilepsy care services focus on keeping you safe while maximising your independence at home and in the community.

An epilepsy care plan, built around you

Living with epilepsy is different for everyone. Some can live independently with little or no support. Others need around-the-clock supervision to control seizures, or live with other complex conditions that require specialist care.

But no matter how epilepsy affects their lives, people often voice similar concerns. ‘What happens if I have a seizure and nobody is around?’

That’s where we can help. At Novus Care, we provide person-centred epilepsy home care services ranging from weekly visits to 24/7 live-in care.

Our aim is to minimise risk to you while providing just enough support to help you live well and live independently. That’s why we work with you to create a bespoke epilepsy care plan, built around your health needs, personal preferences and day-to-day life.

With help from our highly trained carers, you can continue doing the things you love knowing there’s always someone there to support you.

What is epilepsy home care?

Epilepsy home care means specialist support for people living with epilepsy provided in their own homes. It’s different from epilepsy residential care, where the person leaves their home behind to move into a specialist care home.

For many people, receiving epilepsy care at home allows for greater independence and more flexibility. Support can mean occasional care visits to help with medication, errands or high-risk activities like cooking and showering. Or it can mean 24-hour support focused on monitoring safety and managing complex needs.

It’s different for everyone. That’s why we tailor our care to the individual and build it around their specific needs.

Live-in epilepsy care at home

Live-in epilepsy home care is where a specialist carer comes to live with you in a spare room. It may suit you if you need constant, active supervision to stay safe at home, or if you have other complex conditions requiring specialist care. We’ll carefully match you with a carer who shares your interests and outlook on life. That’s because it’s not just about support – we want you to enjoy your time together, too.

Visiting epilepsy home care

If you live independently but could do with extra support now and then, our visiting epilepsy care service might be right for you. You tell us the times and days that suit you, then we send a trained carer to your home to provide tailored support. That could be for as little as 30 minutes each week or as often as several times a day. In any case, we’ll provide as much support as you need to stay independent.

Respite care for epilepsy

Respite care is there to provide breaks for family carers or to cover your care needs temporarily. For example, your carer might be taking a holiday or need to take time off to recover from illness. Or you might need us to step in for a while after hospital treatment or to see whether home care is right for you. Either way, you can expect the same high-quality support whether it’s for a few days or several weeks.

Overnight epilepsy care

We know that the early hours can be especially worrying for those living with epilepsy – especially if they often experience seizures at night. Our overnight care service can provide welcome peace of mind for you and your family. We’ll send a carer to stop over from late night until early morning. They can either stay awake all night or wake when needed – whatever you need to stay safe and feel safe.

Companionship care

Living with a complex condition like epilepsy can be lonely. Our companionship carers focus on providing the confidence and support you need to change that. As well as helping with household errands and seizure management, they can accompany you out and about or just pop by for a chat. Our carers make great companions, so you’ll have plenty to talk about.

Not sure which type of epilepsy home care suits your needs? Talk to our team. We’ll discuss your options and put together a bespoke care plan that works for you.

Your day-to-day epilepsy care plan

Your independence is precious. When you choose Novus Care, we can provide as little or as much support as you need. We tailor our care to you and keep things flexible to make sure our care fits your life – not the other way around.

Day to day, your carer can:

• Help with seizure management: we’ll provide a calm, watchful presence for safety and peace of mind – as well as seizure first aid if needed.
• Help around the home: if living with epilepsy makes managing your home more difficult, we can step in to help with cooking, cleaning and other tasks.
• Help you manage medication: it can be hard to keep track of epilepsy medication. We’ll offer gentle reminders to make sure you take the right dose at the right time.
• Help you get out and about: your carer can help you stay social, attend appointments and join in with your community while staying safe.
• Run errands: if you need help collecting prescriptions or picking up groceries, leave it to us.
• Assist with personal care: we know that bathing and personal grooming can be difficult or even risky for some. We’ll provide discreet support while always respecting your dignity.
• Support other conditions: our carers are trained to support people living with a wide range of complex conditions, from learning difficulties to dementia.

Trained, skilled and CQC-registered

Our carers are amazing people. They truly care about the work they do and are passionate about helping people live more fulfilling lives at home.

They’re highly trained, too. All are employed directly by Novus Care and undergo regular refresher training, so they’re equipped to provide specialist support.

So, as well as understanding how to take care of someone with epilepsy, they can provide tailored care for many other complex conditions.

We offer epilepsy care services in every town and village in England. And no matter where you receive care, you can be sure it meets rigorous standards. That’s because we’re regulated by the Care Quality Commission – England’s chief regulator for health and social care.

Your epilepsy home care questions answered

Why choose epilepsy care at home?
While home care isn’t right for everyone, we believe it’s the best choice for most people. Staying at home means you can structure your care to fit your life while enjoying the things that matter most – like family, pets and hobbies. It also means you can build a strong relationship with your carer. That’s really important for a complex condition like epilepsy.

What does epilepsy home care involve?
It can involve as little or as much support as you need. Your carer can visit occasionally to help with housework and run errands, or they can stick with you 24/7 to help you stay safe and independent. We’ll work with you to create a care plan that accommodates your health needs, lifestyle and work commitments.

What is an epilepsy care plan?
An epilepsy care plan lays out all the support a person needs to manage their epilepsy and live well with the condition. For home care, that includes things like your unique health and care needs, as well as diet preferences, medication, lifestyle, hobbies and need-to-know safety information.

What do I need to know about caring for someone with epilepsy?
The ground rule for how to take care of someone with epilepsy is to manage risk while maximising independence. Depending on how the condition affects their life, they might require constant support, or they might only need a little help from time to time. The best way to know what the right support looks like is to ask.

In any case, it’s vital to familiarise yourself with seizure first aid. This NHS seizure guide is a good place to start.

How much does epilepsy home care cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of care and level of support. Your living arrangement can affect fees, too. That’s because it’s more affordable for a couple to receive care at home from a single carer than to arrange care separately. Learn more about our home care costs.
