Cancer care at home

Home is the best place to receive care. With our cancer home care services, you’ll have the one-to-one support you need to live comfortably in the home you love.

Tailored, expert home care for cancer patients

We know how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis can be – not just for you, but also for your family. That’s why our cancer home care services focus on more than practical support. With Novus Care, you get a tailored care plan built around your unique medical, emotional and social needs. And with a highly trained carer on hand to offer expert assistance when you need it, your loved ones can benefit from our support, too. They’ll have less to worry about and you’ll all have more freedom to spend time together as a family.

It’s all about making sure you can live as comfortably as possible as you undergo cancer treatment. Our carers have supported clients living with many different forms of cancer. With our help, they’ve been able to live peaceful and fulfilling lives in the environment they know best.

What is in-home cancer care?

In-home cancer care is all about providing practical, medical and emotional support to cancer patients and their families. It’s provided by trained carers who visit when needed or live in your home 24/7. All cancer patients have different experiences and distinct care requirements. At Novus Care, we train our carers to support people with many forms of cancer and tailor our care to meet your unique needs.

How our carers can support you

With our tailored approach to cancer care at home, no two care plans are exactly the same. Yours could include:

Post-treatment support: treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be very intensive and disruptive. We’ll be there to support you as you cope with the effects of your treatment.
Health care: our carers can provide low-grade home health care for cancer patients. That includes administering medication, as well as catheter and stoma care.
Personal care: if you need help washing, dressing or using the toilet, our carers will be ready to support you with dignity and discretion.
Mobility support: we can help you stay safe and mobile at home or out and about. We train our carers in manual handling and the use of mobility equipment.
Companionship: emotional support is important. You can always rely on your carer to provide a comforting presence or a listening ear.

Live-in cancer home care

Our live-in carers provide 24-hour home care for cancer patients. With this option, a trained carer will stay with you around the clock so you’ll always have support at hand when you need it. Live-in care can be a good choice for families who can’t provide constant care. For you, it means more time spent together as a family and less time worrying about care.

Visiting cancer care at home

Some cancer patients only need occasional care. If that sounds like you, visiting cancer care at home could be the right choice. We’ll send a trained carer to visit you on a schedule that suits you. That could be every day or once or twice each week – whatever you need to stay comfortable and independent.

Respite cancer care at home

Respite cancer home care is just as specialised and offers the same standard of support as our other home care services. The difference is that it’s temporary. Our clients often choose this option when their usual carer needs to take a break. It can also be helpful during intensive treatment periods when you need a little extra support for a little while.

Overnight support

Does your family provide care during the day, but you need support at night? That’s where overnight care can help. It’s just what it sounds like – a carer will stay with you at home from evening until morning. They’ll be ready to support you and keep you safe if something goes wrong, so you and your family can rest easy.

Palliative care for cancer patients at home

Hospice care isn’t the only option for patients nearing the end of their lives. At Novus Care, we provide compassionate end-of-life care at home for cancer patients facing a terminal diagnosis. Working closely with your medical team, we’ll support you and your family so you can live those final days in comfortable and familiar surroundings.

The benefits of cancer care at home

Comfort and well-being: your home is a place of safety and familiarity. When you’re facing something as difficult as a cancer diagnosis, that familiarity can make a huge difference to your comfort, stress levels and overall well-being.
Personalised care: with Novus Care, you can expect a one-to-one care plan built around your unique medical, emotional and social needs.
Independence: our carers do everything they can to empower clients like you. You’ll be able to carry out your usual routine and make your own decisions.
Reduced infection risk: some cancer treatments can temporarily weaken the immune system. Receiving care at home carries less risk of infections compared to hospitals and clinics.
Emotional support: we know that living with cancer can take its toll on your mental well-being. That’s why our carers offer emotional support, as well as practical help.

Dedicated carers: we’re very proud of our carers and their dedication to providing exceptional care. With Novus Care, you get tailored support from carers employed directly by us – never agency staff.
Real expertise: our carers are regionally managed and receive ongoing training so they can provide the best possible care to clients like you.

Cancer home care FAQs

What is palliative cancer care?
Palliative cancer care focuses on a patient’s quality of life. That means less of an emphasis on treating the condition and more emphasis on comfort, pain management and emotional support. A patient can receive palliative care at any stage of their cancer journey, but it’s most often provided in the terminal stages of the condition. At Novus Care, we have compassionate, highly trained carers who specialise in providing end-of-life and palliative care for cancer patients at home.

What support is available for cancer patients?
There are many types of support available to cancer patients in the UK. For instance, the government can sometimes provide financial aid to help cover expenses or care costs. Charities can offer practical advice and emotional support. And care agencies like Novus Care can provide private cancer care at home to help with day-to-day living.

Macmillan Cancer Support can help you understand which benefits and support services you can access.

Is home care free for cancer patients?
Home care for cancer patients isn’t automatically free. However, some cancer patients may qualify for free care services provided by the NHS. Your local council might also be able to contribute towards the cost of home care. However, this support is means-tested, so you may have to pay a contribution even if you qualify.

How much does in-home cancer care cost?
The cost of in-home cancer care usually aligns with – and occasionally falls below – the expenses associated with residential care. Plus, it offers the added benefit of personalised, one-to-one care – something you won’t often get in a care home.

When you add everything up, choosing live-in cancer home care is often more cost-effective than domiciliary care (visiting care), too. That’s because domiciliary care is typically charged by the hour, while live-in care is an all-inclusive package. And with domiciliary care, you’ll often pay more for specialised services like cancer nursing care at home.
