What is after-stroke care?

After-stroke care is specialist care to help a person adapt to the after-effects of a stroke. It can involve a wide range of support, including speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counselling. Many stroke patients also have home carers to help with health, emotional and practical needs.

No two stroke recovery journeys are the same. Transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs, or mini-strokes) often result in minimal side effects. But severe strokes can cause paralysis, mobility issues, speech difficulties and more. That’s why it’s really important to provide a joined-up programme of care tailored to each stroke survivor.

Visiting stroke home care

Are you on the road to recovery but still need support from time to time? Visiting stroke home care might be the best choice for you. Sometimes called ‘domiciliary care’, this type of care sees a trained carer visit you to provide support as often as needed. That could be every day or as little as half an hour each week.

Respite care for stroke patients

We understand how challenging it can be to adjust after a loved one has had a stroke. With our temporary respite care for stroke patients, family carers can take a well-deserved break while we provide a consistent level of high-quality support. This option might also suit you if your carer falls ill or if you’re still deciding how to move forward with home care.

Overnight care

Overnight stroke care at home is just what it sounds like. A specialist carer will stay overnight from around 10pm to 7am, so you and your family can rest easy knowing you have help at hand. You might want to consider this option if you have a family carer during the day but don’t have help at night.

Companionship

Companionship care focuses on your emotional needs. It’s all about having a friendly face and a safe pair of hands. Your companion carer can encourage you in your recovery, help you get out and about, or simply stop by now and then for a chat. They can help with health care and offer practical support, too.

Do I need to keep specialist equipment for stroke patients at home?
Stroke can – but doesn’t always – lead to mobility challenges. If you or your loved one needs help getting around at home, specialist equipment can make things easier. Common equipment includes walkers and wheelchairs (for general mobility), bathroom safety tools (like grab bars and shower chairs) and physiotherapy devices.
