Respite home care

With temporary (respite) care, you’ll get the support you need while your usual carer takes a break. We provide tailored respite care at home lasting from 2 weeks to as long as you need.

In-home respite care that’s built around you

We all need to take a break from time to time – including family carers. But we know it can be tough for everyone when your usual carer steps away for a while.
Don’t worry. When you choose respite home care from Novus Care, we’re very careful to make sure you receive the same care you’re used to. We’ll work with you to create a tailored care plan and match you with a carer who we’re sure you’ll get along with.

For you, that means eating your favourite meals, doing the same hobbies and sticking to the same routine in the home you love. And for your family, it means extra peace of mind. They’re free to enjoy their break knowing you’ll stay safe, comfortable and as independent as possible.

And like all our care, it’s delivered by expert carers who are trained to support people with a wide range of health conditions. That includes long-term and complex conditions like dementia, cerebral palsy and brain injuries. With their support on your side, everyone can rest easy.

What is respite home care?

Respite care is a type of temporary care. At Novus Care, we focus on providing respite care at home. That means a carer will live with you or visit your address, providing tailored support so you can stay independent and stay at home.

Respite care is sometimes known as ‘short-term care’. However, it doesn’t have to be short-term. Our respite home care service can last for as little as 2 weeks – but if you need them for several months or even years, that’s fine too. There’s no upper limit on how long your carer stays with you.

A temporary carer can also become a permanent carer, if that’s what you and your family think is best.

Why might I need respite home care?

People choose in-home respite care for all sorts of reasons. For instance:

When carers need to take a break: it’s called ‘respite care’ because it’s often used to provide respite for carers. Your usual carer can go on holiday or take time out knowing you’ll be well cared for while they’re away. That means they can come back refreshed, happy and ready to help you again.

When carers fall ill: we can’t choose when we fall ill or have to go to hospital. But with our highly trained short-term carers on standby, you’ll have a trusted person ready to support you when your usual carer can’t.

While you recover from an illness: sometimes, people only need care for a few weeks or months. If you need help recovering after an illness or hospital treatment, we can send a temporary carer while you get back on your feet.

As a way to trial live in care: do you need extra support at home but aren’t sure you’re ready to commit to long-term care? Respite home care can be a great way to get a feel for our care and find out if it’s right for you.

What do short-term carers do?

Our short-term carers are there to provide the same support you’re used to at home. That can include:

• Companionship and emotional support
• Taking you to appointments and on social trips (e.g. to the hairdresser, doctor or cinema)
• Personal care (toileting, washing and dressing)
• Health care (e.g. taking medication, helping with medical devices like catheters)
• Cooking and food shopping
• Housekeeping, including bed making and washing clothes
• Feeding and caring for pets
• Keeping you safe and comfortable at home

Live-in respite care

With live-in respite care, you’ll have 24/7 support at hand. We’ll match you with a carer who’ll come to live with you at home while your usual carer takes a break. That means you’ll get the same great support and the peace of mind that someone’s always there. This type of care could suit you if you have mobility difficulties or a complex health condition that needs around-the-clock support.

Visiting respite care at home

If you don’t need a live-in carer, visiting respite care might be your best option. We’ll work with you to arrange a visiting schedule and send a carer to offer support when you need it. That could be several times a day or a couple of times a week. Like all our respite care, it’s very flexible and is built around your unique requirements.

Emergency respite home care

Do you need support right now? When you choose emergency in-home respite care, we can often arrange a temporary carer on the same day. That makes it ideal for sudden and unexpected situations, such as your carer falling ill or going into hospital. With this option, we’ll complete your care assessment within 2 days of your carer’s arrival.

Overnight respite care

Overnight respite care is just what it sounds like. It’s a type of temporary care where a carer stays with you overnight to help with things like mobility, health care and personal care. It can be very helpful if you need extra support at night, but your usual carer can’t be there. With one of our trained carers standing by, you and your family can rest easy.

Short-term companionship care

Let’s not forget how tough it can be when a trusted companion takes a break. That’s where short-term companionship care can help. This type of respite home care focuses on keeping you engaged and relieving loneliness. Your carer will be there to take part in hobbies with you, accompany you on trips or just share a cuppa and a natter. They’ll only be with you temporarily, but you might feel like you’ve known them for years.

If you’re not sure which type of respite care is right for you, don’t worry. Our team is here to help. Get in touch and we’ll work with you to create a tailored care plan built around your needs.
