Home care for the blind and people with sight loss

Get just the right level of support to secure your independence. Our home care for the blind is here to help you navigate day-to-day life and do more of the things you want to do.

Helping blind people live fulfilling, independent lives

Living with sight loss doesn’t mean you can’t live well. While blindness and visual impairment can create daily challenges, it’s still possible for many people to lead fulfilling and independent lives with the right support.

At Novus Care, we specialise in offering tailored, person-centric home care for the blind and visually impaired. It’s care built around you, the things you want to do and what you want to achieve. And because we always provide care at home, it means you don’t have to leave your familiar surroundings or family behind.

It all starts with a free home care assessment. We’ll work with you to put together a bespoke care plan focused on your unique needs. That means minimal disruption and no loss of control over your day-to-day life. Instead, it’s about providing just the right level of support to help you stay safe and independent in the home you love.

What is home care for the blind?

Home care for the blind focuses on providing the right level of support to help blind people and those with sight loss live independently. It can range from occasional visits to 24-hour care, depending on how much help the person needs and whether they have any other health conditions.

The key thing is that home care is provided in the person’s own home, either by visiting or live-in carers. With care for the blind, that often means making adjustments to the home to help with getting around safely, as well as offering day-to-day support. Like all our care services, it’s tailored to the needs and preferences of each client.

Live-in home care for the blind

Live-in care might suit you if you need help adjusting to sudden sight loss or if you just need extra support day to day. A carer will come to live with you in a spare room, so there will always be someone around to offer assistance. As with all our care services, we tailor their support to your needs and carefully pair you with someone who shares your interests.

Visiting care for the blind

Visiting care is often best for those who live independently but need extra help from time to time. We’ll work with you to draw up a care schedule and send a trained carer to support you as often as you need. They can help with all sorts of things, including popping to the shops, catching up with housework or simply stopping by for a chat.

Respite care for the blind

Respite care is usually a short-term arrangement. We’ll send someone to cover your usual caregiver while they take a break. This option may suit you if you have a family carer and want to make sure you receive consistent care while they’re gone. It can also be helpful for people who need short-term care after hospital treatment, such as eye surgery.

Overnight care

We know that living with sight loss can be very different at night than during the day. It’s common for people to live independently in the daytime but need extra support or specialised equipment at night. That’s where our overnight care service can help. A carer will stay from late evening, making sure you feel safe and supported until morning comes.

Companionship care

Blind and visually impaired people are 3 times more likely to experience feelings of loneliness and isolation compared to the general population (Fight for Sight). Our companionship carers are there to help you feel happy and socially fulfilled, even if that simply means popping by for an occasional chat.

Not sure which type of care is best for you? It’s normal to have questions, especially if you’re considering home care for the first time. Get in touch with our friendly team and we’ll have an informal chat about your options.

Home help for blind people: what to expect

When you choose Novus Care, you get a tailored care plan delivered by trained carers and built around your needs and preferences.

Our carers are there to help you live independently, not to take over or change your routine. They’ll work with you to find ways to keep you feeling confident and capable at home and in your community. That might mean stepping in with a little extra help when needed or being there 24/7 to help you manage health conditions and stay safe.

Each care plan is different, but it could include:

Personal care: we can help with personal tasks like dressing and hygiene, while always respecting your dignity and privacy.
Chores and errands: our carers can assist with those everyday tasks that you might find difficult, from light chores to shopping trips and errands.
Navigating your home: your carer is there to help you stay safe as you move around at home, including clearing trip hazards and guiding you when needed.
Help with assistive technology: if you use devices like screen readers and talking clocks, our carers can help you set them up and use them day to day.
Preparing meals: we can prepare nutritious meals tailored to your dietary needs, or help as you cook for yourself.
Looking after pets: animal companions are great for well-being, but conditions like sight loss can make pet care more difficult. We can step in to help keep them happy and healthy.
Social and emotional support: as well as providing practical help, we offer emotional support to help you adjust to changing circumstances and maintain a good quality of life. That includes day-to-day companionship, as well as assisting with outings and social activities.

Trained carers who respect your choices

We want you to feel safe and confident with the care you receive. That’s why we carefully vet our carers to make sure they’re right for you and passionate about providing tailored, person-centric care.

All our carers undergo strict background checks during the recruitment process. They also receive ongoing training to make sure they can support people with a wide range of conditions, including different types of sight loss. That includes training in mobility techniques that can help you move around safely, such as showing you how to use a cane.

You can have confidence in our management team, too. We’re a CQC-registered agency with 14+ years of experience helping blind people live fulfilling, independent lives. For you, that means reassurance that we provide quality care and undergo regular checks to make sure our standards stay high.

Your care questions answered

Is there an age limit on home care for the blind?
No. We provide care for blind elderly clients, as well as young adults aged 18 and over. Sight loss can affect anyone of any age. What’s important is that you get the right support to stay as independent as possible, whether that’s occasional help or 24/7 live-in care.

Can you care for people living with complete sight loss?
Yes. We know that experiencing sudden or complete sight loss can be overwhelming. However, we also know that the right support can enable you to continue living independently in the comfort of your own home. By choosing care from Novus Care, we can work together to adapt your living space and routines to suit your needs.

Can you care for people living with partial sight loss?
Yes. For those experiencing partial sight loss or a gradual decline in vision, we offer patient, step-by-step guidance to help you adapt to your changing circumstances. Our tailored support could be just what you need to navigate these changes and improve your quality of life.

Can you care for people living with glaucoma?
Yes. We understand the challenges that come with glaucoma, especially when dealing with new or changing environments. Our carers are trained and experienced in helping people with various types of progressive sight loss, including glaucoma.

I need temporary care after eye surgery. Can you help?
Yes. We provide practical assistance and emotional support for people recovering from eye surgery. You can choose short-term or long-term support – whichever suits your needs best.

Who pays for home care for the blind and visually impaired?
Some people pay for care using their own savings or with insurance schemes. You might also qualify for financial support from the government or your local council. For council social care funding, you’ll need to arrange a care assessment. This is where the council looks at your circumstances and decides how much financial support you need.
