What is Down syndrome home care?
With Downs syndrome home care, a carer comes to visit you or moves in to offer extra support. That support looks different for everyone. For some, it might mean getting a bit of help with jobs at home, taking medication or getting ready for work. Others need 24/7 care from a live-in carer.
When you choose Novus Care, you get a tailored Down syndrome care plan. This covers all your practical and emotional needs and makes sure you get the right support for any health conditions you have. We’ll also match you with a carer who shares your interests and outlook on life, so you can build rapport and enjoy your time together.

Live-in Down syndrome home care
With live-in care, a trained carer comes to live with you at home. That might be your family home or, if you live independently, your own house or flat. This option means there’s always help available if you need it, because your carer will only be moments away. It might suit you if you need quite a lot of support to feel fulfilled or manage health conditions.
Visiting adult day care for Downs syndrome
If you live independently or only need a little bit of extra help, visiting care may be the best option for you. We’ll work with you and your family to understand what kind of support you need and how often. Then we’ll send a carer to your home at a time to suit you. That might be once a week, a few times each day or something in between.
Down syndrome respite care
Down syndrome respite care is a type of temporary care that’s provided by trained Down syndrome carers and tailored to you. It might suit you if your family carer needs to take a break. We’ll step in to make sure your needs are met and help you follow your usual routine until your carer comes back. It can also be a good option if you need a bit of extra help recovering after hospital treatment.
Overnight care for Down syndrome adults
Do you have support during the day but need extra help at night? Our overnight carers can stop over at your home from evening until morning. That means there’ll always be a trusted person there to offer support if you need it. It’s a little bit of extra reassurance for you and your family.
Companionship care
Sometimes, all you need is a friendly face you can rely on. Companionship care is a type of person-centred care for Downs syndrome adults that focuses on emotional and practical support. Your carer will be there to chat, help you figure things out and stick by your side so you feel more confident in day-to-day life.
Not sure which type of care is right for you? We can help. Get in touch with our team and we’ll put together a tailored Down syndrome care plan built around your needs, wishes and routines.
Your tailored Down syndrome care plan
At Novus Care, we know that caring for someone with Down syndrome isn’t just about doing the basics. You’re a unique person with unique needs and goals. You might want help to live alone, go to work or just feel more fulfilled and independent at home. And you might have specific medical needs that can be hard to manage on your own.
That’s why our care focuses on you as a whole person. We don’t just help with practical things. We also support you and your family to meet your emotional needs and help you do more of the things you want to do.
Our carers can help with:
- Everyday home life: we can help at home where you need extra support – for example, with cooking, cleaning or personal care (washing and dressing).
- Independent living: if you live on your own or are preparing to move out, we can provide the right level of support to help you be self-sufficient.
- Going to work: we’ll be there to make work life feel simpler, including helping you get ready and assisting with your commute.
- Social life: we know how important it is to have friends and family around you. Our carers can help you visit friends or welcome them into your home.
- Emotional support: your carer will get to know you and learn about your emotional needs, including what triggers emotional responses and how to best support you.
- Medication support: we can help you with medication, making sure you take the right dose at the right time to stay safe and healthy.
- Advocacy: your carer will stay by your side and can be your voice when needed, speaking up to make sure your needs are met.
- Getting out and about: our carers will be on hand to help you get to appointments. For extra reassurance, they can also go to the appointment with you.
Carers who care about you
At Novus Care, we want you to feel supported to live life your way. That’s why we carefully match you with carers who you’ll get along with and who work hard to provide the right support for your needs. They’ll only step in where needed, so you can be more independent and achieve things on your own.
It’s all about making sure you feel supported, safe and comfortable in your day-to-day life. Our carers are dedicated to providing high-quality care and have lots of experience in caring for people with Down syndrome.
When you choose us, you can expect:
- Expert support: we employ our own carers and provide thorough training so you can feel confident about our care.
- Friendly, local carers: Novus Care has branches throughout England, so you’ll be supported by a friendly and compassionate local carer.
- Trusted and regulated care: we’re fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the main regulator for adult social care in England.
Your Down syndrome home care questions answered
What is Down syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic condition that happens when a person is born with an extra chromosome (47 instead of 46). Chromosomes carry DNA – the main building block that tells the body how to develop and function.
People with Downs syndrome usually have some level of learning disability. However, this is different for everyone and can range from mild to severe. The syndrome can also cause developmental delays, meaning it often takes longer for children with Down syndrome to start doing things like walking and talking. Those with Down syndrome are more likely to develop certain medical conditions, too, such as heart problems, gastrointestinal (gut) issues, immune disorders and dementia.
However, not all people with Down syndrome experience the same effects or face the same challenges. Many can live independently, attend further education and maintain a career. And with the right level of support, it’s possible for anyone with Down syndrome to live a comfortable, happy and fulfilled life.
Is home care better than residential care for Down syndrome adults?
Down syndrome residential care is one option for people with Down syndrome and their families. This is where the person moves into a dedicated care home and receives specialist, around-the-clock support.
However, at Novus Care, we believe that care at home is the best option for most people. It means you can receive high-quality care in a comfortable and familiar environment – including 24/7 care if needed. For many, this makes it easier to stay independent, see family and friends, and stick to familiar routines.
However, it all depends on your individual Down syndrome care needs and what you and your family want to do. For some, residential care feels like the better fit.
How much does Down syndrome home care cost?
At Novus Care, we tailor our support to you. That means every Down syndrome care plan is different and is priced according to the level of care you need. Why not chat to our team and let us provide a tailored quote for your care?
Can I get help to fund my care?
Many people with Down syndrome are eligible for funding support from their local council. However, this isn’t guaranteed. It’s also means-tested (based on your income and savings), so you may have to pay a contribution. Learn about your options for funding care.
